Duotone
Work Harder…
Originally issued March 2010, soon to be re-releasedSometimes the quietest voices are those whom speak the loudest of all. This is certainly true of the immaculate, hushed multi-layered, acoustic songs contained within Duotone’s debut “Work Harder & Some Day You’ll Find Her”
Duotone is the name under which Barney Morse-Brown (cellist for The Imagined Village, Chris Wood’s Handmade Life and Eliza Carthy’s band) writes and performs his own contemporary acoustic songs and music.
A well chosen moniker, Duotone have recorded a short set of thought-provoking music set to a canvas upon which the two main ingredients featured (cello and acoustic guitar) gently meld with lap steel (BJ Cole) , live loops and strings over which Morse- Brown sings his quietly intelligent, crafted lyrics.
Duotone offer up beautiful flourishes of warmth in contemporary sound, but there are also nods toward England’s acoustic, minimalist classical and electronic past masters. ACOUSTIC Magazine described the album as ‘conjuring up the very spirit of the 70’s Canterbury Scene’.
Coming from a musical family of seven children, Barney’s passion for performance was established early on. He was awarded a scholarship to study baroque cello at the Royal Collage of Music, but during a two-year break from the cello after university, Barney focused his attention on songwriting and teaching himself guitar. For those two years he worked extensively with other songwriters around Oxford, became more and more in demand on the session musician scene, and in his spare time, began to focus on his own songwriting and performing. Now it seems that experience will not have been time wasted as “Work Harder…” and Duotone are fast becoming one of the word of mouth success stories of 2010. Duotone will also soon take to the stage again in support of the album, (having opened for Imagined Village in January) more details for which can be found on Duotone’s Myspace.

Chris Wood
Albion – An Anthology(R.U.F / Navigator)
Spring / Summer 2009
Compiled, licensed and sequenced by Tom in conjunction with Chris Wood, this double CD anthology spans each of Chris’ releases to 2008, including The Imagined Village, Two Duo’s Quartet and his much loved collaborations with Andy Cutting. Released to more fantastic reviews, the album is the perfect primer for anyone wishing to sample the variety and scope of the traditional and contemporary material Chris recorded / released on 11 of the 12 albums from the RUF catalogue. Includes the beautiful unreleased track “The Farmer”.
A genuine labour of love, that incorporated overseeing the re-mastering, design, photography and liner notes through to Navigator label management, publicity and marketing campaigns to promote the release ahead of Chris’ (then) forthcoming new studio album and tour “Handmade Life” which followed in the Autum of the same year.
Chris Wood
Trespasser (R.U.F)
Summer 2007 – Spring 2009
After self releasing his debut solo album Albion in 2004 to a clutch of passionate reviews in the specialist press, the campaign for its 2007 follow up Trespasser was put together in partnership with Chris. The aim was to build upon that good feedback and take things to the next stage, in conjunction with an improved profile and increased spend on marketing his music around the new album and gigs.
An ever increasing groundswell of positive support for Chris’ music meant Chris had started to attract far greater coverage in the media for his music and was now playing to larger audiences. This campaign lasted a over a year and culminated in Chris winning several awards, including Folk Singer Of The Year at the BBC Folk Awards 2009 ceremony, before playing major summer festivals both solo and with The Imagined Village. Reveal Records issued a triple vinyl gatefold package of The Lark Descending & Trespasser during this period (available from www.reveal-records.com), which Tom put together, licensing from Chris’ R.U.F label.
